MISS originated in South Central Minnesota in 1981 as a crop scouting company known as Tri- County Crop Survey. Tom McGraw began the business while he continued farming. As he harvested his own crops, Tom realized yield variations across the field and became curious. Soon after, he added grid soil sampling services to his scouting business. The business grew and expanded beyond the three county area, and the company name was changed to Minnesota Crop Monitors. Before GPS systems, GIS software and field computers, Tom walked the fields collecting soil samples using a measuring wheel for dead reckoning, a backpack and the ever- constant hand probe. The original "stop light" color system and other soil sampling innovations developed in the "early days" are still in use today.
