Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common nerve compression disorder treated by hand surgeons. It is manifested by tingling of the fingers, finger numbness, hand numbness, hand pain, wrist and forearm pain, and in severe cases, muscle wasting of the hand. There are many factors that can contribute to the development of CTS.
Appropriate and timely carpal tunnel treatment can prevent the development of permanent disability. Conservative treatment may be sufficient for carpal tunnel relief, however many patients eventually require carpal tunnel release surgery. The goal of surgery is to prevent progression by decreasing pressure on the median nerve at the wrist.
