On July 1, 1968, Kingman and Reno Counties officially merged their resources and opened the Kingman-Reno Mental Health Institute in Hutchinson, Kansas. The Institute opened its doors with 200 people on the waiting list. Over the next seven years, Pratt, Harper and Barber Counties joined the Mental Health Institute to create its present service area. Horizons currently operates offices in each of the five counties. In 1978, The Mental Health Institute merged with what is now known as Promise Regional Medical Center and became an affiliate. The Mental Health Institute became Horizons Mental Health Center in 1985.
